What do you do when there is no school, weather is good and husbands have work off? Pinecone hunting!

Who would've guessed that pinecones are ripe during Labor Day? We went pinecone hunting and the kiddos LOVED it. What kid would not like riding four wheelers, eating hotdogs, and climbing trees?

We went with our friends, Edgingtons and everyone got their do-rags on. The bandanas are to keep the sap out of your hair. The girls had more fun playing house under the big pine boughs than actually picking the pine cones. Wondering how exactly do you go about pinecone hunting? Well, you have some people (Dan and Matt) climb the tree and then throw down the pinecones. The typical pinecone on the ground doesn't have the seed in it. You need the green, sappy ones that are found at the top of the trees. They look like this...

This is what the pine seed, you know those seeds you throw into pasta salads, looks like before it enters the package in the store.
It was a ton of fun. One of those simple family events that everyone still talks about.

Daradie listed pinecone hunting as one of her favorite things to do in a kindergarten survey. Wow! I wonder what other simple things in life will rank right up there.

Angilee,
It looks like it was fun -- I'm sad we missed it! I'm assuming the next outing will be WAAAYYY up in Idaho next year. You guys'll have to remember us......
You always do the most creative activities! What a great Mom you are.
I am glad the pine cones were not ferocious and no one was in mortal danger. Then again to much pine sap in the hair does make one want to grab the scissors. Your blog always makes me smile!
